Walking – one of the easiest ways to get around!

For many students, walking will be their main way of getting around Sheffield.

The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam's campuses, the city centre and many of the popular student areas are all within walking distance of one another.

Living close to university can mean that you can walk to lectures rather than relying on public transport every day.

A few things to know about walking in Sheffield

Sheffield is famously hilly, so some journeys can take a little longer than you might expect from looking at a map!

The upside is that many popular student areas are close enough to university that you may not need to worry about transport at all.

Buses – the main way many students travel around Sheffield

Sheffield has an extensive bus network connecting the universities, city centre and surrounding student areas.

Buses are particularly useful if you're living further out from university or don't fancy walking up Sheffield's hills!

You can use buses to travel between areas including:

Crookes → University → City Centre → Ecclesall → Broomhill → Crookesmoor

Check current routes, journey times and fares before travelling.

Supertram – a useful option for getting further around Sheffield

Sheffield's Supertram network connects the city centre with a number of areas across Sheffield and beyond.

It's particularly useful for journeys that aren't as convenient on foot, including trips towards Meadowhall and other parts of the city.

For students living centrally, the tram can also be useful for shopping trips and exploring Sheffield.

Cycling – a good option for getting around the city

If cycling is your thing, Sheffield has a growing network of cycle routes and is a practical option for some student journeys.

Sheffield city centre has plenty of taxi and private-hire options, so students have alternatives to walking or public transport late at night.

Sheffield railway station is located just south of the city centre and has regular services to cities including:

Coming home for the weekend? Sheffield's central railway station makes travelling home or exploring other UK cities relatively straightforward.
