Dealing with condensation

Condensation is an issue nearly every property has to deal with throughout the year (especially winter). Condensation occurs when a lack of warm air or ventilation is present in the home, particularly in the shower or bathrooms.

Here are some of our tips to help reduce condensation in your student accommodation and help keep the mould away:

1. Wipe down the shower screen, bath/shower tiles and floor tiles to get rid of the excess moisture.

2. Never turn off the extractor fans in the shower/bathrooms and kitchens as they help circulate the air and reduce the risk of condensation.

3. If there is a window in the shower/bathroom or kitchen then opening these during a shower, bath or cooking will also help reduce the risk of condensation.

4. First thing in a morning if there is condensation on the windows, then wipe them down with a dry cloth and open the windows to allow for ventilation of the room.

5. If the weather outside is too cold to have the windows open, then having the heating on will keep the air in the home warm and ventilated and help with reducing condensation. 

6. Dry your clothes outside where possible, if you are drying clothes indoors make sure the heating is on or the windows are open to let the moisture from the clothes escape and help reduce the risk of condensation.

7. Using a pan lid when cooking will help to reduce the risk of moisture escaping from the pan which could lead to condensation on the windows and other surfaces.
